ESD shielding bags are commonly used to package electronic components to prevent damage caused by electrostatic discharges, which are prone to occur in electronic devices. It is important to understand how to use ESD shielding bags correctly.
The shielding bag must be sealed with a label or tape. Alternatively, zippered shielding bags can be used. This ensures electrostatic shielding. This is the only way to protect ESD-susceptible devices placed in the shielding bag. Unsealed ESD bags provide no protection!
If you receive ESD-sensitive equipment packaged in a shielding bag, place the closed shielding bag on top of an ESD workstation before removing the product. This allows any charge that may have built up on the surface of the shielding bag to be removed.
If the shielding bag is not damaged, it can be reused. However, if the shielding bag has holes, tears, or excessive wrinkles, it should all be discarded.
ESD shielding bags are intended to protect ESD sensitive products from ESD damage.
A properly grounded ESD work surface must be used when handling ESD sensitive products.
ESD Work Surfaces
Do not use shielding bags as an "ESD pot" or "ESD glove" when handling ESD sensitive equipment. They do not provide ESD protection for this unit. Always use a wrist strap or ground when handling ESD sensitive equipment.
